History
Café Clare is situated in the Clare Moot House. The building originated in the 16 Century – but could be earlier! Our quaint property and the adjoining properties once comprised the Moot Hall of Clare. The Moot Hall was used as a public meeting place – possibly a court, and looking at the cellar confirm that it might possibly have been used as a gaol as well!
The oldest deeds available tell us that it was a private dwelling – although it was at that time being used for certain town meetings. We know from the deeds that one whole wing was demolished in 1851. Indeed, in the 1800's it may well have been used as a kind of Dickensian tenement, comprising several one room apartments. One particular artefact on the first floor – a doorway measuring some 4ft, would indicate that people were generally somewhat shorter in those days.
Mary Green sold what was the Moot Hall (our neighbouring property together with the central structure (Café Clare) in 1841, but retained what is currently the kitchen area, and the area above as a self-contained flat. Mr Deeks purchased the property (probably upon the death of Mary Green), who then established a tobacconist in the premises. The business was then passed on to Mr Deeks' son in 1920 – Mr Deeks (junior) continued trading from the premises until 1965 when the premises became an architect's office. Many locals still remember Mr Deeks (junior). The premises were subsequently sold and became estate agents. Mr and Mrs Steele purchased the property in 1981 and had much success with the Peppermill Restaurant. And so to the present day. It is with great thanks to Mr and Mrs Steele who have shared with us the secrets past that we are able to cast a light on the interesting history of the building.
This beautiful treasure has now been entrusted to our care, such that it may be preserved for generations to come. After finding this beautiful old building we plan to give it some TLC and take it back to its former glory.
We - the partners in Café Clare - have immense enthusiasm for the treasure with which we have now been entrusted.
We will now focus on providing Clare with tasty local Suffolk foods and wines!
